Congratulations to political science major, Derek Hoot who was awarded a Boren Scholarship! The scholarship will fully cover the costs of Derek's study abroad in Jordan for the 2017-2018 academic year. While in Jordan, Derek will spend his first semester furthering his Arabic language skills at the Qasid Institute for Classical and Modern Standard Arabic. In his second semester Derek will have an internship working with refugee populations.

In addition to his political science major, Derek has a minor in Arabic studies and is a member of the James Scholar Honors Program in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences as well as the Department of Political Science Honors Program. Derek is a scholarship member of the University of Illinois varsity men's wheelchair basketball team and has held multiple leadership positions in campus student organizations.
